Our Story – from Pain to Power
Like too many of us, Wayne and I have had our fair share of painful medical concerns. Despite his efforts to exercise religiously and follow various healthy eating programs, Wayne began to suffer from multiple digestive issues in his mid-twenties. He was diagnosed with extreme acid reflux, a pre-cancerous condition called Barrett’s Esophagus, and put on watch for ulcers. The typical medical response to these painful conditions is to load up with a variety of pills, and so Wayne followed suit. This began what looked to be a lifetime of rollercoaster pain and progressively stronger medicine that would work for a while and then lose its punch.
I have suffered from severe migraines since I was a young child. In my younger years the migraines would cause vomiting, auras, and pain that rendered me incapable of leaving my room. As I grew into adulthood the migraines expanded to include strokelike neurological symptoms where my left face and arm would go completely numb. Through the years I tried various prescription painkillers until things finally came to a head one day when the neurological symptoms began to expand to numbness in my left leg. At this point I was nervous that I might be having a stroke and ended up in the emergency room. Thankfully it wasn’t a stroke, but this visit to the ER led to a slew of appointments, tests, and scans with a neurologist’s recommendation “to try” 5 new prescriptions.
Determined to find real relief from our conditions, Wayne and I have searched high and low for the best solutions. We have tried all sorts of options such as chiropractors, physical therapy, nutritional supplements, protein powder, massage therapy, yoga, and acupuncture to name a few. We have tried many successful (and some not-so-successful) tools to support our wellness goals, and at last have landed on our favorite solutions: a whole foods, plant-based lifestyle and a gentle, yet profound form of bodywork called Bowenwork.
These solutions have worked so well for us in fact that I am proud to report that my headaches have decreased in frequency by ~98% and the neurological symptoms, vomiting and auras are gone. Wayne has tested free of Barrett’s esophagus (which caused much confusion at the doctor’s office as they compared before and after images) and no longer experiences pain from digestive problems. Another pleasant outcome is that neither of us are on prescriptions for these conditions any longer!
It seems that nearly everyone we meet has a story about someone living with pain or chronic illness that affects their ability to live life to the fullest. The great news is that everyone has the power to change their circumstances for the better. The whole foods, plant-based lifestyle and Bowenwork are available for people of all ages, shapes, and sizes. And these solutions are not solely for the conditions we mention here, but also help a wide variety of other chronic health concerns. See more information on our Resources page.
It is our pleasure to share our favorite solutions with you that focus on safe, natural preventative care. We are so glad you found Cruciferous and are privileged to be a part of your transformation to health and happiness.

Melissa is fascinated by how people think and function. With a bachelor’s degree in international business & marketing from New York University, Leonard N. Stern School of Business, and a master’s degree in management of technology, from Arizona State University, Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering, she focused her research and studies on how people think, make decisions, and use technology to provide access to mental health services. Her interests grew to include the human nervous system which led to training and certification as a Bowenwork Practitioner. Melissa uses her understanding of the interconnected nature of the body and mind to help clients find freedom from discomfort with her Bowenwork practice.
